iLSYPE

About iLSYPE

iLSYPE exists to make anonymised LSYPE data and metadata (data about data, such as sampling details, questionnaires, coding schemes) available to the public: researchers and academics alike.

Browsing individual files reveals the variables that make up the file, giving details such as survey question, response rates, and basic frequencies. A common classification scheme (which users will shortly be able to personalise) enables browsing by topic area. By selecting and linking variables from different files users can create bespoke files which can be saved to a private iLSYPE workspace.

Additionally, entering a search term automatically extracts relevant variables from all the public iLSYPE files into a single virtual dataset which users can browse, modify and/or save. Both saving and downloading data require completion of a registration form including agreement to DfE terms and conditions for use of LSYPE data.

How do I begin?

A good start is to browse datasets in the public workspace and read information boxes :

Alternatively, look through Guides in the Documentation tab above - in particular those on Browsing and Linking datasets.

How to browse datasets ?

  • navigate through datasets using the categories
  • view variable metadata

How to use the search to create a custom dataset ?

  • use 'Search' to find variables
  • use 'Display Options' to change the way variables are presented.
  • create a dataset from a search result

How to use the quick crosstab ?

  • crosstab from a search result or a dataset
  • customise the crosstab
  • view an automatic graph
  • download in Excel

How to download a custom dataset ?

  • get the data in CSV for Excel
